This image depicts the hands of a laboratorian holding a quad plate, which having been inoculated with a culture medium, displayed varying amounts of colonial growth in each of its four quadrants. A quad plate contains a different bacterial growth medium in each of its quadrants, and is used in the identification of organisms, which can be tied to the contents of the growth media upon which they best thrive. In this case, the colonial growth in the lower-right quadrant was more sparse than the other three quadrants. Knowing the contents of this medium, would hopefully, help lead the investigator down the path ending in a positive identification of the organism responsible for the colonial growth.
