Caption:
This image depicts three cells that were discovered within an extracted guinea pig bone marrow specimen, which included two megakaryocytes with their lobulated nuclei. Their multilobular nucleus only appears to be multinucleated (arrows). Megakaryocytes are bone marrow constituent cells that are responsible for the production of platelets, which are integral components in the clotting process. The hemocytoblast, which is the pluripotent stem cell within the bone marrow milieu, gives rise to all bone marrow cell types, including the megakaryoblast, or the precursor cell line leading to the development of the megakaryocyte, and finally, the production of platelets.
