In order for a healthcare provider to measure a patient’s blood pressure, a sphygmomanometer will be used. Pictured here, this device consists of a pressurized cuff that encircles the patient’s upper arm, and a monitor, which indicates changes in pressure within the cuff. The stethoscope, seen in the background, is then used by the clinician, who listens for the sounds produced within the brachial artery, as the blood resumes its circulation through this vessel, when the pressure upon the upper arm is reduced within the cuff.
