Caption:
This image depicts an infant mouse at necropsy, which had succumbed to the pathogenic effects of the mouse hepatitis coronavirus (MHV), which was formerly known as the lethal intestinal virus of infant mice (LIVIM). See PHIL 16467, for a closer view of this necropsy. This virus causes lethal enteritis, and upon pathologic investigation, the intestinal tracts of this deceased mouse showed marked flaccidity, i.e., an atonicity, and contained watery, yellowish material. Of note, was the fact that only the intestines showed any histopathologic changes. The infant mouse exhibited a lack of a normal, healthy pink coloration.
