This image depicts a sink located in a healthcare setting, however, there were two details in this scenario that are often found to enhance the propagation of bacterial colonies responsible for potential nosocomial infections: the bar soap, and the faucet aerator. In this case, the bar soap, which can become contaminated with bacteria, was set atop the sink in a manner that prevented it from properly drip-drying. Using a soap dispenser is a scientifically proven superior method to facilitate handwashing. In scientific studies, the faucet aerator has been shown to collect, and enhance the growth of waterborne microorganisms, which if located close enough to a hospital patient’s bedside, could act to disperse harmful microbes in the patient’s direction when the sink is being used.
