Caption:
This image depicts two Petri dish culture plates from the front, each containing a medium of human blood agar, to which menadione had been added. Each dish had been inoculated with Prevotella melaninogenica, formerly known as Bacteroides melaninogenicus bacteria, and each was incubated at a temperature of 35°C for a 5-day period. Known to form pigmented colonies, as was the case on the left, on the right, the bacteria manifested as non-pigmented colonies. P. melaninogenica is a normal floral inhabitant of the human oral and vaginal cavities, and has been recovered from anaerobic infections involving the respiratory tract, brain abscesses, urinary tract infections, to name a few.
