This illustration depicts a dorsal view of a Hippelates pusio biting fly, more commonly known as an eye gnat. H. pusio are known to derive nourishment from eye secretions, and are prevalent during the warm months. Eye gnats have been implicated in playing a crucial role, as a mechanical vector in the transmission of Haemophilus spp. organisms, responsible for causing outbreaks of seasonal conjunctivitis. Gnat-borne transmission of this disease has been documented in animal studies.
