This image depicts a photomicrograph of a Gram-stained vaginal discharge specimen. As part of a differential diagnostic study, after its analysis, a diagnosis of genital-vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) was determined to be this patient’s malady, which had been caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans organisms. Note the Gram-positive, darkly stained yeast cells, one of which was designated by an arrowhead, as it was reproducing by way of a process known as budding. There were also numerous, Gram positive bacilli throughout the field of view.
