Caption:
This photomicrograph of a hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained specimen, revealed some of the cytopathology associated with an early staged granuloma inguinale lesion. See PHIL 18897, for a view of this specimen under a lower magnification. The sexually transmitted disease granuloma inguinale, or Donovanosis, is caused by the bacterium, Klebsiella granulomatis, formerly known as Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, and even earlier Donovania granulomatis. The causative organism is difficult to culture, and diagnosis requires visualization of dark-staining Donovan bodies on tissue crush preparation from a biopsy.
