This photomicrograph of a cresyl violet stained spinal cord tissue specimen, reveals the normal neuronal cytoarchitecture found in the cervical spinal cord, in the region of the anterior horn. Cresyl violet specifically stains Nissl substance, i.e., rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), in the cytoplasm of neurons, imparting a purple-blue, granular appearance to the neuronal cytoplasm.
