Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of a hypochromic red blood cell (RBC), or erythrocyte (arrowhead). Hypochromic RBCs are indicative of a condition also referred to as hypochromia, a disease that manifests as a reduction in hemoglobin content of the RBC. This blood cell disorder can be caused by a number of factors including iron deficiency, thalassemia, abnormalities of iron metabolism, and sometimes the genetic disorder known as sideroblastic anemia.
