These two public health field workers were in the process of examining a female patient, who had been diagnosed with beriberi, and at this point in the exam, had assumed a kneeling position, evidently exhibiting great difficulty in her ability to walk normally. It appeared that the thiamine, or B1 deficiency, had profoundly affected her nervous system, and coordination.
