Under a magnification of 158X, this photomicrograph of a Warthin-Starry stained heart tissue specimen, revealed the presence of a number of Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes, the cause of Lyme disease. At this stage, after having infected the heart muscle, the disease is more specifically referred to as Lyme carditis.
