Caption:
This illustration depicts two views of an unfertilized chicken egg. On the left, an exterior view of the eggshell, and on the right a coronal view cut along the egg’s long axis. The eggshell is porous, allowing for the exchange of gasses during an embryo’s development. The cut-away view, revealed a number of structures seen early on, inside the egg, including the interior membranes, which separate at the top of the shell giving rise to an air sac, the yolk, albumin, and the blastodisc, or germinal disc, which if this egg were to become fertilized, will be the anatomical point at which the embryo will begin taking shape.
