Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed two different types of white blood cells (WBCs), otherwise known as leukocytes. The larger of the two in the upper right, was a monocyte, and in the lower left was a lymphocyte. Leukocytes are not oxygen carriers, like the red blood cells (RBCs) that filled the remainder of this field, but act as members of the body’s immune system, fighting the constant onslaught of pathogenic bacterial invaders, and foreign debris.
