Caption:
This photograph depicts a close view of a Petri dish culture plate, which had contained a growth medium of blood agar that had been inoculated with a Streptococcus mutans bacterial culture. Plate incubation gave rise to numerous small, round, and what appeared to be clear bacterial colonies. Note how the colonies were surrounded by a lightly pigmented halo, indicating a region in which hemolysis had taken place, involving the destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) present in the blood agar medium.
