Caption:
This image depicts a close view of the penis of a male patient, who had presented with swelling and inflammation of the glans penis and prepuce, known as gangrenous balanitis, which was a secondary to a primary gonorrhea infection, caused by the Gram-negative, diplococcal bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Balanitis is characterized by erythematous areas on the glans penis, and at times the prepuce, or foreskin, in conjunction with pruritus, or irritation. In this case, the balanitis was brought on by the N. gonorrhoeae bacterial infection, though it can also be caused by local bacteria, retained urine, smegma, or generally poor hygiene.
