This photomicrograph revealed the histopathology associated with a section of skin affected by a dermatophytic fungal organism, and causing a condition known as tinea versicolor, also known as dermatomycosis furfuracea, or tinea flava. Note the presence of the spherical, yeast-like fungal cells, and short hyphae. Usually tinea versicolor is caused by Malassezia spp. fungi, usually, M. globosa, and less often, M. furfur.
