Caption:
This 20-month-old female infant had undergone multiple amputations, including both feet, and her left hand at the wrist, after having contracted a disease known as meningococcal septicemia, or meningococcemia, which had been caused by the bacterium, Neisseria meningitidis. The disease had caused a number of arterial occlusions, which resulted in gangrene in the amputated extremities.
