This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a dermatology patient’s skin surface, revealing the presence of brown pigmented lesion, which was diagnosed as melanoma. In this particular instance, the patient’s background included, being a member of a melanoma prone family. A cluster of moles on the patient’s back, which were believed to represent dysplastic nevi, were photographically documented over time, in order to facilitate subsequent follow-up. When re-examined 18-months later, the dysplastic nevus on the left had developed a new 3mm black nodule, which proved to be invasive malignant melanoma arising in a dysplastic nevus.
