This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a dermatology patient’s skin surface, revealing the presence of brown pigmented lesion, which was diagnosed as a superficial spreading melanoma. This particular lesion arose from a dysplastic nevus, and was 4mm x 8mm in size with irregular borders. The lesion exhibited a pink-tan color in its upper left region, which represented the original dysplastic nevus, while the invasive malignant melanoma exhibited a characteristic blue-black coloration, notched border, and distorted surface. The gray area at the lower left represented tumor regression. Use of this image requires acknowledgement that NCI is the image source, as well as the inclusion of the website, www.cancer.gov.
