Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph of a blood smear, revealed the presence of a basophilic leukocyte (arrowhead), also known as an basophil, a type of white blood cell (WBC). A polymorphonuclear (PMN) WBC, due to its multilobular nucleus, which here, is difficult to see, this basophil is categorized as a granulocyte, due to the presence of abundant large granules in the cell cytoplasm. Surrounding the basophil were numerous red blood cells (RBCs), also referred to as erythrocytes.
