This photomicrograph depicts the cytoarchitecture exhibited by a section of intestinal epithelial mucosal that had been excised from an individual with non-tropical sprue, or more precisely, gluten-induced enteropathy. Note the thickened, fused, and blunted morphology of the intestinal villi.
