This December 2012 photograph, depicted Pakistani Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) residents (from left) Dr. Mohammad Amin, Dr. Ali Hashim, Dr. Naveed Memon, and Dr. Sohail Memon, as they were in the process of inspecting an open water source, in the district of Barkhan, near Pakistan’s capital city of Islamabad. This activity took place after an outbreak of acute watery diarrhea (AWD), which occurred in a district village. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise, so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
