This photograph depicted what appeared to be an unhappy Uzbek child, as he sat next to a sibling, while eating a mango. This young boy was found to be unvaccinated during a visit to an Uzbek bazaar, located in the union council locality of Kharotabad, Balochistan, Pakistan, during July 2011. The discovery took place, when Dr. Khushal Khan Kasi, a Pakistani Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) resident, came upon him, while conducting a Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) eradication campaign, in the country where FETP personnel sought out any unvaccinated children, previously missed on the first go-around of polio vaccine administrations. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
