This photograph depicted Central Asian Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) resident, Lyazzat Sekerbayeva, as she was in the process of interviewing a patient, in preparation for her planned study, which would focus on the determinants involved in what was a newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patient’s choice, when she had delayed seeking medical care. This activity was taking place in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, in August, 2012. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
