Caption:
This image depicted the hands of a young Nigerian child from a dorsal perspective, revealing their swollen, edematous appearance, as well as some sloughing of the skin on the right hand’s dorsal surface, in the region of the proximal index finger. This condition was attributed to an inherited blood disorder known as sickle cell disease (SCD). In this case, the deformed sickle-shaped red blood cells (RBCs), clogged the venous pathways that normally channel blood away from the hands, thereby, causing the severe swelling you see here.
