These field epidemiology workers, were in the process of labeling freshly collected blood specimens, which had been acquired from animals, as part of a local epidemiologic study. From the back of this truck’s tailgate, the scientists were creating the labels. They were using adhesive tape stuck to a board, and upon which, they would appropriately designate the contents of each blood specimen, including the geographic location of the animal species, the date, and the name of study. An epidemiologist would extract a blood sample from a trapped specimen, and depending upon the type of study being conducted, would run the appropriate tests on the sample in order to determine if the specimen had been infected with the pathogen under investigation.
