Wearing her dark blue uniform, this nurse was conducting interviews, as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded HIV Incidence Provincial Surveillance System (HIPSS) project, which is a longitudinal study that monitors HIV incidence trends in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The survey will establish the population-level incidence of HIV, and will help understand whether HIV prevention and treatment programs that have been implemented, and scaled-up over the last several years, have benefitted individuals and communities, and whether these interventions are likely to reduce the number of new HIV infections.
