This image depicts a right anterior oblique view of an infant’s head, neck, and chest. The infant was born with two genetic disorders: congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma (CIE) and achondroplasia. CIE, an autosomal recessive disorder, is characterized by generalized scaling and desquamation of the skin, as well as ectropion (outward turning of the eyelids) and eclabion (outward turning of the lips); alopecia may also be present. Achondroplasia, an autosomal dominant disorder, is characterized by impaired bone growth, including shortening of the proximal limbs and digits, frontal bossing, and a flattened nasal bridge, along with additional features not visible in this image.
