Caption:
Under a magnification of 150X, this photomicrograph of a human lung tissue specimen, stained using the Periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) staining method, revealed histopathology encountered due to a case of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, formerly known as P. carinii. Note how some of the alveolar air spaces are filled with a foamy, amorphous material containing proliferating fungal organisms, along with cell debris.
