This photograph of a patient’s hands, revealed a phenomenon known as koilonychia, which involved a flattening of the fingernails, as well as concavities, or indentations and ridges on the nail surface. You can see the manifestations of this abnormality especially well on the patient’s thumbnails. Koilonychia may be due to an iron-deficiency anemia, which was the case in this instance.
