This image depicted a close view of a patient’s lips, that exhibited lesions about the labial surfaces, as well as the angles of the mouth, which had been attributed to a vitamin B3 deficiency, known as pellagra. Being an inhabitant of an impoverished region, this person’s diet consisted mainly of maize, that had not been processed in a manner, which would have made it a possible food source for its tryptophan content.
