Caption:
Under a low magnification, this was a photomicrograph of a brain tissue specimen, which had been harvested from a patient’s diencephalon, and revealed the histopathologic changes exhibited by the two mammillary bodies, indicative of areas of hemorrhage and necrosis. Caused by a thiamine deficiency, these changes were part of a neuropathology known as Wernicke’s encephalopathy, or Wernicke's disease. See PHIL 21279, for an ultrastructural view, highlighting the cytoarchitectural changes in the affected areas seen here.
