Caption:
This 4-year-old Cardiff, Wales, smallpox patient presented with what was characterized as a modified variola major rash, which resembled varicella. There was a cropping of the lesions in their distribution pattern. The patient was felt to have been inoculated, by way of a laparotomy wound, as well as possibly through having received a blood transfusion. Here you are able to see the maculopapular rash on the medial, and plantar aspects of the patient’s right foot. See PHIL 10417, and 10418, for two additional views of this patient’s condition.
