Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been fighting cholera in Haiti, since the epidemic began in 2010, following the country’s devastating earthquake. CDC-Haiti provided financial and technical support to the government of Haiti, including resources to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), through increased water treatment and sanitation services, municipal chlorination of drinking water, the training of rural sanitation technicians, and the promotion of household water treatment products such as AquaJif—a liquid-based chlorine disinfection product. Here, water collection from a hand-dug well was being monitored during a WASH evaluation. This picture earned photographer, Alaine Kathryn Knipes, a tie for Third Place, in the 2016 CDC Connects, Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of International Programs.
