Bangladesh, one of the poorest and most densely populated countries in the world, has experienced rapid urban growth in recent decades. This urbanization, coupled with the growth of urban slums, has had a profound effect on maternal and child health. This image was captured in 2016, at the Korail slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The mother and child featured in the photograph, were visited once a month as part of a community-based maternal, newborn, and child health program. This picture earned photographer, Alyson Rose-Wood, a tie for Second Place award, in the in the 2016 CDC Connects, Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of International People.
