Entitled, “Asbestos Contaminated Zonolite: A Dead End”, this image was captured by CDC’s Robert M. Castellan, MD, MPH, in the Division of Respiratory Disease Studies, NIOSH. A telling street sign in Atlanta, Georgia, marked the former site of a processing facility for Zonolite, an attic insulation, containing asbestos-contaminated vermiculite, sourced from a mine near Libby, Montana. In 1999, ATSDR began evaluating related human health concerns in Libby. This photo earned Dr. Castellan the First Place award in the 2007 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of Programs-Domestic.
