Caption:
This 2002 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicts the strut-like construction of a single scale from a butterfly's wing, magnified 6127X. Note the struts and perforations of the individual scale. This helps to promote heightened aerodynamic lift during the insect's flight, as well as reduce the weight of the wing mechanism.
