Caption:
This photograph shows a captured cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus. This species occurs in the southeastern United States and extends into Central and South America. It is larger than the North American deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, measuring approximately 5–7 inches in head-and-body length, with a tail of about 3–4 inches. The coat is coarse and grayish-brown to grayish-black. Cotton rats inhabit overgrown areas with shrubs and tall grasses and are recognized reservoirs of hantaviruses.
