This 1948 photograph shows a Malaysian man lying on a gurney outdoors, shielding his face from sunlight with a cloth. A sign reads “N.Y.D. Fever ? Scrub Typhus,” indicating that the cause of his fever was not yet diagnosed and suspected to be scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. An eschar is visible in the right lateral axillary region, a characteristic finding of this infection, which is transmitted by the bite of infected chiggers (larval mites).
