This 1965 photograph shows a close-up of the skin surface revealing an eschar with a scabrous crust, characteristic of scrub typhus following the bite of an infected chigger (larval mite). The infection is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The image was created by Cornelius B. Philip, PhD, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana.
