This 1948 photograph shows a seated patient who was a volunteer member of a scrub typhus study team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The patient sustained a bite from an infected chigger (larval mite) on the anterior right leg (see PHIL 23440) and subsequently developed scrub typhus caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The image was created by Cornelius B. Philip, PhD, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana.
