This 1948 photograph shows a left anterior oblique view of the right lower leg of the patient shown in PHIL 23439, a volunteer member of a scrub typhus study team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The arrowhead indicates the site of a bite from an infected chigger (larval mite). The patient subsequently developed scrub typhus caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The image was created by Cornelius B. Philip, PhD, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Montana.
