At a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen reveals histopathologic changes associated with infectious hepatitis, now known as hepatitis A. Note the presence of ballooned hepatocytes, characteristic of a pathologic process known as ballooning degeneration, a form of hepatocellular injury marked by cellular swelling.
