Caption:
At a magnification of 125X, this photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen, stained using the Alcian blue (AB)–periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) (AB/PAS) method, reveals histopathologic changes associated with infection by hepatitis A virus (HAV). Note the presence of lobular disarray resulting from HAV infection, characterized by hepatocellular injury including ballooning degeneration, Councilman bodies, and a mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate. See PHIL 23478 for a view of this section at higher magnification.
