Caption:
At a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen, obtained from a patient with hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, was stained using the colloidal iron method, highlighting the presence and distribution of acid mucopolysaccharides. With this staining technique, the abundant acid mucopolysaccharides appear as a characteristic blue coloration. See PHIL 23479 for a corresponding view of this tissue section at lower magnification.
