At a magnification of 125X, this photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen, obtained from a patient with hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, reveals portal tract mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration and periportal hepatocellular necrosis, while the region surrounding the central vein is relatively spared. Note the lighter staining areas indicative of lobular disarray resulting from HAV infection, characterized by ballooning degeneration and the presence of Councilman bodies throughout the hepatic parenchyma.
