Caption:
This image shows a posterior view of a bed-ridden 2½-year-old male diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), historically referred to as Letterer–Siwe disease and histiocytosis X. LCH is characterized by clonal proliferation of pathologic Langerhans cells, a type of dendritic cell involved in immune function. The patient demonstrated features associated with the Hand–Schüller–Christian pattern, including exophthalmos and multiple lytic bony lesions, particularly involving the cranium; however, diabetes insipidus was not observed. A petechial cutaneous eruption is visible on the back. See PHIL 23623 through 23628 for additional images documenting this patient’s condition.
