This photograph depicts a 12-day-old infant being cradled by a physician. The infant was born with a congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. From this posterior view, the patient exhibits an erythematous rash composed of vesicular skin lesions. See PHIL 23674 for another view of this infant’s condition at closer range. The infant also developed herpetic keratitis in the right eye (PHIL 23673), which was treated with idoxuridine (IDU); despite treatment, the lesion progressed to a dendritic corneal ulcer. The left eye was not affected.
